Youth Activities

A big part of the Fair is education. The Wenatchee Fly Fishers, under the leadership of Pat Herdt, organized the activities for youth. There were two parts to the activities. Students from the Easton High School, about 40 miles west of Ellensburg, came Friday morning to learn about fly fishing. They were taught fly tying, what fish fish eat and fly casting. In the entomology session at least one of the girls screamed when a BUG started crawling toward her across the table.

Starting at noon on Friday and continued through Saturday were free one on one fly tying sessions. These were mainly for youth, but if an adult wanted to try it was permitted. These pictures were taken by Pat Herdt, Wenatchee Fly Fishers members and Bob Bates.

Note: Some Easton youth live almost on the Yakima River. Several said that they haven't fished the river because they didn't know how. With information from these classes several told the volunteer teachers they will go back and try.
