The contests span the universe of casting disciplines, from plug casting for distance and accuracy, to single and double-handed flycasting for distance as well as trout fly and bass bug casting for accuracy. In one North American competition, he won 11 of 12 events.

Steve is a frequent demonstration caster at Federation of Fly Fishers events. In September 2001 he was the main demonstration caster for the Northwest Fly Casting Exposition at Trophy Lake Golf and Casting Course. His skills with a fly rod awed everyone there.

He broke out his tournament distance rod, and literally threw the line out of sight. (It went over a small down slope and disappeared.) When he talked about accuracy casting, he was casually casting to a ring. Every time the fly stopped over the center of the ring.

Also he was very open about fly casting, fly rod differences, casting styles and what it takes to make a good cast.
